It will help aerate and water cycle and during hot summers it can help cool the water.

There are some who use the battery (2 to 4 D batteries) and starts right when there is a blackout, but still needed an outlet to detect.

This may depend on what type of filter you use. Sponge filters require air pumps to operate.

Air pumps are used to filter the basement and add oxygen to your tank .. Heads and electric pumps can pull or push the water through a filter! Their many different kinds.Do your homework and I think you will find water pumps work best.

Air pumps don't add oxygen to the water, they agitate the surface to oxygenate the water. Powerheads do this for you in a marine tank :)

He/she has either a filter or a skimmer that is breaking the water enough to oxygenate the water. I have no pumps, but adequate filtration that is doing the same job as a pump. As long as the surface of the water is being broken, it will be fine.
