Macedonia -- Officials believe a broken valve on an oil tank at a Highland Road corporation is the cause of a large oil spill in Brandywine Creek in earlier this month.

Kurt Kollar, on-whereabouts coordinator for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's emergency response unit, said Oct. 23 that after the header was discovered Oct. 14, it was traced back to M & M Certified Welding on the south side of Highland Road.

Kollar said it appears that while stirring a waste heating oil tank Oct. 13, two of M & M's employees accidentally broke the valve at the back of the property and most of the estimated 200 to 300 gallons of oil that was in the tank spilled into an unnamed tributary of Brandywine Inlet that flows along the property's south side.
